Amy Witherite Warns Companies to Pump the Brakes on Autonomous Trucks

The rollout of fully autonomous semi-trucks in Texas has been delayed, as Aurora Innovation pushed its launch to April 2025 to further test and validate its self-driving technology. Texas has long been a testing ground for driverless semis, but these vehicles have always had human operators on board as a safety precaution. Amy Witherite, founder of Witherite Law Group and a traffic safety advocate, welcomed the delay, emphasizing the importance of ensuring safety before removing human drivers entirely. “We need to proceed cautiously to prevent tragic accidents involving 80,000-pound vehicles,” Witherite said. She has also raised concerns about the lack of federal and state oversight for autonomous trucks, calling for more regulation to protect drivers on the road.
